چکیده

Arsenic pollution in groundwater caused serious environment and health problem world widely. Few are reported for the occurrence and mechanisms of arsenic pollution in deep aquifers, though it is well documented by numerous study for arsenic enrichment in shallow groundwater. In this study, arsenic pollution was found in deep wells for drinking purpose. A total of 112 drinking groundwater samples, with burying depths 80 620 m, were collected from sedimentary aquifers in Yunchemg Basin, China. Hydrogeochemistry and geochemical statistical methods were conducted together to investigate the occurrence and mechanisms controlling arsenic concentrations in deep aquifers in the area. Our results show that c.a. 13 % of deep groundwater are enriched with arsenic (> 10 μg/L). The arsenic polluted groundwater are concentrated in aquifers with burying depth 200-300 m in low lands and lacustrine deposition areas in the south-central basin. We also find that the major factors responding for As enrichment in groundwater include: 1) desorption of fluoride from the mineral/organic matter surfaces under alkaline condition; 2) anthropogenic contamination, using of pesticides and fertilizer, introducing As into groundwater. Our findings suggest that cautions should be made for the management of deep As contaminated groundwater.

A Comparative Evaluation and Field Implementation of Treatment Technologies for Arsenic Removal from Groundwater

Background of the Arsenic Crisis The groundwater pollution caused by arsenic (please see Box 1) in a number of Asian countries has led to a major environmental crisis. Some recent estimates indicate that more than 35 million people in West Bengal (India), Nepal and Bangladesh are potentially at risk from drinking arsenic-contaminated water (Smith et al., 2000). The crisis has its roots in anoth...

Characteristics of Environmental Geochemistry in the Arseniasis Area of the Inner Mongolia of China

In China, endemic arseniasis attributable to the geological-geochemistry environment is mainly found in the plain of the Great Bend of the Yellow River and the Hu-Bao plain in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, in the Datong basin of Shanxi Province, the floodplain of the northern side of the Tian Mountain of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and in the southwest coastal plain of Taiwan. Evaluation of the sustainability of deep groundwater as an arsenic-safe resource in the Bengal Basin.

Tens of millions of people in the Bengal Basin region of Bangladesh and India drink groundwater containing unsafe concentrations of arsenic. This high-arsenic groundwater is produced from shallow (<100 m) depths by domestic and irrigation wells in the Bengal Basin aquifer system. The government of Bangladesh has begun to install wells to depths of >150 m where groundwater arsenic concentrations...

Spatial Distribution and Seasonal Variation of Arsenic in Groundwater of the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal

A study was conducted in forty-one deep groundwater and twenty shallow groundwater wells of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal to assess arsenic contamination (shallow and deep groundwater) and spatial and seasonal variation in deep groundwater. The depths of the wells were ranged from 9 to 304 m. Groundwater samples were collected during pre monsoon and post monsoon in 2012. Atomic Absorption Spectromete...

Groundwater Quality and Arsenic

Water Pollution is an alarm at the global level. The groundwater is continuously decreasing, in anthropogenic pressure as well as naturally. Arsenic is one of the prominent contaminant, which is degrading the quality of groundwater naturally. In India, arsenic pollution in groundwater is mainly reported from West Bengal. Since its first reported case in early eighties, there are 1312 affected v...
